Care Guide and FAQs
What even ARE Air Plants?
Tillandsia are epiphytic perennials belonging to the bromeliad family. Yes, the very same one as pineapples! They lack the traditional root systems of soil bound plants and instead absorb water through the atmosphere or through rainfall by living attached to the sides of trees and rocks. Their natural habitat ranges from Mexico through Central and South America.
Xeric or Mesic?
There are many subspecies of Tillandsia but they all fall within two categories of plants. Xeric or those from arid or desert environments, and mesic those from the humid tropics. This means while all air plants require routine watering, they do not all thrive in constant heavy humidity as excessive moisture can quickly develop into rot.
Watering Care:
Bright filtered light is best. Outdoors plants can be kept under an overhang but keep out of afternoon direct sunlight. For indoors place no more than 3 feet from a brightly lit window, but do not keep plants in windowsill during harsh winters.
For both indoor and outdoor care, water once a week during growing season (May-October). May limit watering to once a month during winter seasons. To water thoroughly wet the plant with a shower head watering can or hose setting. Allow to thoroughly dry within 6-8 hours. DO NOT SOAK YOUR PLANT.
Are Air Plants Safe for Pets?
Yes! While your cat may want to take a cheeky little nibble out of the leaves, you can rest assured knowing Tillandsia are non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, because some leaves can be sharp if broken it is still possible for your pet to hurt themselves if ingested. More than likely your biggest issue with air plants and pets will be your naughty cat playing with them like a toy.
